002.jpg For a day that would see lots of wind, you would never know it from this image of stillness and tranquility at Poudre Lake. Our 13-mile hike to the Gorge Lakes begins here at this trailhead. Gorgeous reflection! image by hikemaster2

006.jpg The Gorge Lakes hike begins on the Mount Ida trail, from which gorgeous westward views of the Never Summers such as this are possible. Stratus, Nimbus, and Cumulus bask in red morning sunlight! image by hikemaster2

007.jpg Hikemaster Scott's camera enjoys its last day after thousands of pictures. It was buzzing early and often on this tundra hike that gave magnificent photos in all directions. image by hikemaster2

008.jpg A giant spotlight seems to shine on Mount Cumulus (hiked by Hikemaster Scott on July 29, 2008) through some trees on the Mount Ida trail. The snow clinging to the peak seems to reinforce that Cumulus is a "Never Summer" mountain! image by hikemaster2

009.jpg A large section of the Never Summer Mountains on the west side of RMNP. This range is the youngest in RMNP, but the peaks are perfectly gorgeous! Some of the group was worried about the clouds this day...but Hikemaster Scott was optimistic! image by hikemaster2

018.jpg YMCA hikers on the Mount Ida trail, with Mount Speciman in the backdrop. Hikemaster Scott led the hike, with Hikemaster Tony as "co-pilot". Other current and former hikemasters came along as well...this is one super hike! image by hikemaster2

028.jpg Tough looking clouds in this northeast-ward view from the Ida trail. The YMCA hikers will be turning the corner and heading down the ridge (towards the right) to drop into the Gorge. image by hikemaster2

030.jpg The tip of Mount Ida peeks above the ridge in front in this view to the south. The YMCA hikers will be bending around the rim you see here in an effort to avoid gaining unnecessary elevation. image by hikemaster2

035.jpg Those are not the Gorge Lakes, but they're still pretty! The Mummy Range (Chapin, Chiquita, and Ypsilon) rise in the center distance to the northeast. image by hikemaster2
  • Billy and ...

037.jpg Billy and Rodrigo (foreground) head east along the ridge leading into the Gorge. The tundra walk seems to go on a while, but is worth it once the overlook of the Gorge is reached a few paces further on from here... image by hikemaster2
  • Hikemaster...

039.jpg Hikemaster Scott enjoys his first hike with Rodrigo, YMCA staff member from Spain. Rodrigo did great on the hike, and it was wonderful for the hikemasters to get to know him better. This view is to the west (Never Summers). image by hikemaster2
  • Hikemaster...

042.jpg Hikemaster Scott poses with two of his favorite hiking buddies, Billy (center) and Matthew (right), on the ridge leading to Gorge Lakes. Billy did math research this summer and is majoring in math at Nebraska, just like Scott did! image by hikemaster2
  • The cloud ...

043.jpg The cloud patterns and color patterns continue to inspire photos! The Never Summers are spectacular! Mt. Richthofen (highest in the Never Summers and 22nd overall) rises in the right center. image by hikemaster2
  • At the end...

044.jpg At the end of the Ida ridge, this view down the Gorge opens up abruptly! Wow! Billy was in awe----Arrowhead Lake, largest in RMNP, lies far below. image by hikemaster2
  • Wow, spect...

045.jpg Wow, spectacular! Cracktop Mtn dominates the scenery behind Inkwell Lake. Hikemaster Scott ranked Gorge Lakes the 4th best hike of 2008, and with better weather/routefinding and 2 extra lakes, it could do even better this year! We'll see! image by hikemaster2
  • Hikemaster...

050.jpg Hikemaster Scott takes a photo with Christina atop the ridge above the Gorge Lakes. This is one of the prettiest spots to enjoy a vista in the entire park...and very rarely visited at that! What a lucky group of YMCA hikers! image by hikemaster2
